“If you like cameras flashing every time we go out / And if you’re looking for someone to write your breakup songs about / Baby I’m perfect,” Harry Styles sings with jaded weariness during the breakdown of current single Perfect.īeneath its upbeat, air-punching chorus, this is a song about doomed relationships conducted in anonymous hotel rooms in “places we can’t even pronounce”, inevitably invoking his affair with another pop star, Taylor Swift (who wrote Style about him). Whilst this is arguably a better album than their previous releases and certainly more mature, it is very debatable whether they ‘can live forever’ or if this, Made in the A.M., will be the end.Young men aged between 21 and 23 who have been world famous since their teens, 1D and Bieber have shifted from puppy love innocence to rebellious sexual swagger in the ceaseless glare of social media and reality TV. The repetition of ‘we can live forever’ and the crescendo mid-song with Louis singing ‘this is not the end’ echoes the defiance in ‘Drag Me Down’ and gives the fans hope of more to come.

Whilst they’re clearly singing of a relationship, many of the lyrics are also applicable to them as a band. However, the album ends with defiance, with a perhaps poignantly titled track called ‘History’. It feels like a lustful song, with high-pitched repetitions of ‘come on’ and lyrics like ‘lips so good I forget my name’. The opening really did remind me of ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ but it is more upbeat and snappy, which perhaps justifies its place on the album. ‘Never Enough’ is an example, which is probably great to dance to but a bit cringeworthy to listen to. The love songs therefore are strong, but there are a couple of deluges into the cheesy pop they’re known for. 'The love songs therefore are strong, but there are a couple of deluges into the cheesy pop they’re known for.' The riffs in it are also quite effective. The latter encapsulates images of gentlemanly chivalry, saying ‘I want to lend you my coat’ and is very simple and sweet. Similarly, later with ‘Love You Goodbye’ and ‘I Want to Write You a Song’, they are soft soulful love songs that really make the album. It is a ‘nice’ love song and will doubtless have some 1D fans shedding a few tears. The repetition of ‘down to earth’ creates a gentle and soothing sound and indeed, is incredibly atmospheric. The fourth track ‘Infinity’ is simplistic but beautiful, with minimal instrumental and gentle lyrics. The subsequent tracks are mostly love songs, all with rather mournful tones this certainly isn’t the kind of cheery pop of ‘What Makes You Beautiful’. After this are the two released singles, ‘Drag Me Down’ and ‘Perfect’, which I think are two of the strongest tracks on the album.

However, after a while the repetition of ‘hey angel’ does feel a little excessive and you might find it gets on your nerves quite quickly. It has a strong drum beat throughout and some rather effective vocals. The album starts with ‘Hey Angel’, which is catchy and bright. Still, for the most part this album feels different and I would perhaps venture, better, than what came before. Despite the more sorrowful tracks though, there are a couple of their trademark cheeky and cheesy love songs. It does feel like a response to losing Zayn Malik, growing up and to the many relationships they’ve had during the last five years. Consequently, this album feels like the band is very aware of where they are in life. However, this album is a tad more serious than their previous offerings and certain tracks (notably ‘Drag Me Down’) have an air of defiance. This has left legions of devoted fans disappointed, with others grateful they don’t have to hear One Direction’s latest chart topper every time they go shopping. It is, at the very least, their last before a two-year hiatus. One Direction have been reliably producing their own cheeky brand of pop for the last five years, but this album, Made in the A.M., is speculated to be their last.
